Chamber Clean-up Update #1 Wednesday 27 October 2004
Clean-up Cayman Campaign begins
The Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Heavy Equipment and Vehicle Operators Association (HEAVO), the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Environmental Health have launched a new campaign to clear debris and clean up the streets of Grand Cayman. The initiative is being funded from monetary and supply donations received from the private sector.
Dubbed "Clean-up Cayman", the campaign began on Saturday, 23rd October with the first phase of the clean-up along the cruise ship visitor route from Smith's Cove to the Cemetery across from the West Bay Fire Station. All parties agreed on the clean-up route during a meeting on Fridayand several businesses donated garbage bags, gloves, brooms, shovells, rakes, water, ice, first aid equipment and snacks and equipment to assist the clean-up crews. Hundreds of persons are assisting with the effort and heavy equipment is being used to remove large debris from several buildings that were badly damaged during the hurricane. The clean-up was organised in preparation for the visit of executives from the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association on Monday, 25th October.
"Clean-up Cayman" will continue as long as donations are received and will expand to all of George Town and ultimately to the outer districts. Companies interested in contributing to the campaign are asked to call Ms. Kerry Forbes at the Chamber of Commerce at 949-8090. The clean-up crews have now turned their attention to the Eastern Avenue and Industrial Park areas. Persons interested in volunteering for weekend clean-up routes are asked to call the Chamber. Routes will be assigned and clean-up equipment and t-shirts will be provided.
The Chamber wishes to thank the following companies and organisations for the generous donations received to date: Thompson Development, Uncle Bill's Home Improvement Center, A. L.
