Transportation

Taxicabs are located in abundance right at the airport and at all major hotels. Many are minivans, which can conveniently accommodate a large group or a couple with loads of diving gear. There is a clearly marked stand once you exit the customs area at Owen Roberts International Airport. Fares are based on a minimum fees of $6.25, plus a per mile rate and also a charge per person. Check with the dispatch for an accurate fare to your destination based on the number in your party before departure.

There is a local bus service available that services the main routes through George Town, up West Bay Road (Seven Mile Beach area), and into West Bay. They are, for the most part, white mini-vans with a colored circle sticker on their back and front, indicating their route. You will find clearly marked bus stops all along West Bay Road, but you can flag them down as they beep at you when they drive by. They will drop you at your desired destination (as long as it falls on their route). The cost per person is very low (around $2 US), however the schedule is not completely reliable. The depot is located in downtown George Town, on Edward Street, next to the Public Library. Check with the dispatch for details on routes and times.

By far the most convenient and easy method of land transportation is car rental. Some visitors hesitate at the thought, as we drive on the left in the Caymans, but the ease of conversion is much less difficult than most imagine. Many car rental agencies are located right at the airport, and most have pick up and drop off service to any hotel on the island. The cost can be quite economical in comparison to daily taxi fare, and what could be more fun than driving a Jeep with the top down on a beautiful Caribbean day?

A few hotels and resorts offer an airport shuttle service; check when making accommodation reservations if your hotel offers this service and whether it is complementary, or with charge.

Cayman Airways offers flight service.
